Bann is a medical assistant to Prince Raffin and his lover and eventually his consort.

Appearance[]

Bann has a broad chest and shoulders. Bann is "a broad mountain of a man, with eyes like the gray sea." He is fast and strong.

Personality[]

Bann is kind and loves medicine making almost as much as he loves Raffin. He radiates calm. He talks a lot. He is very smart.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Bann's parents died from a sickness when he a child. As a boy, he worked in the libraries of King Randa's castle. One day, Prince Raffin stumbled across him, and they began talking about herbs and medicines. Shortly thereafter, Raffin begged Bann to help him with an experiment, and from then on, Raffin effectively stole Bann for himself. He became Raffin's assistant in all things.

Graceling[]

Bann is a member of the Council. He takes care of Prince Tealiff after he is rescued by Katsa, Giddon, and Lord Oll from King Murgon's dungeons. Bann and Raffin see Katsa and Po off when they leave Randa's castle to search for information about who kidnapped Prince Tealiff. They promise to continue taking care of Tealiff and keeping him hidden while they're gone.

Later, Bann attends Bitterblue's coronation in Bitterblue City with Raffin and Lord Oll. He and Raffin are the only ones supportive of Katsa and Po's decision not to get married.

Bitterblue[]

After the Council helps depose King Drowden of Nander, some of his remaining supporters crossed into the Middluns and attempted to kill Raffin and Bann in retaliation. Thankfully, Katsa was there and she was able to stop them, but not before they destroyed Raffin's workrooms. Katsa brings Raffin and Bann to Queen Bitterblue's castle for safety.

Raffin and Bann train with Bitterblue under Katsa in sword fighting. They also attend the Council meeting to discuss the popular uprising soon to occur in Estill. Bann votes for the Council to involve itself in the uprising.

Bann, Raffin, and Katsa take a trip into Sunder. They will then return to Bitterblue's castle because they can't return home as Randa has made it known that members of the Council aren't welcome in the Middluns. Raffin claims it is only “political bluster” and Randa is just trying to appease the kings of Estill, Sunder, and Wester because they dislike him even more than they used to as a result of the Council's support in deposing Drowden.

Bann shares Katsa's suggestion with Bitterblue and Helda for a place to hide Saf should the need arise. There's a room on Winged Bridge for the drawbridge operator. But as the bridge is so tall, there has never been a need for one, so the room is furnished and empty.

Winterkeep[]

Bann continues to work as a leader in the Council. He is now Raffin's consort. Bann and Raffin had been in contact with Mikka, the Monsean envoy to Winterkeep. They would correspond about medicines. Mikka would send Raffin packages full of seeds and leaves he found during his travels.

Seasparrow[]

Bann and Raffin continue as members of the Council and working as chemists. Hava recalls having overheard them once talking about the theory of indivisible particles.

Relationships[]

Raffin[]

Raffin and Bann love each other very much. They share common interests and their romantic relationship grew out of their friendship. They are protective of one another, and don't like to be separated. They make a good team together. Bann's groundedness balances out Raffin's abstraction. Bitterblue wishes that they could make a king together because they would be good at it. Raffin and Bann in an obviously comfortable and loving relationship. With just a glance they can share a silent agreement, tease each other, or just rest their eyes on each other, “as if each man was a comfortable resting place for the other.”
